NFC tap not working

What to check when your physical card doesn't trigger a notification.

If your physical Umbel card isn't opening your profile when tapped, it's usually one of these.

Find the sweet spot

The NFC reader sits in different places depending on the phone:

  • iPhone — the very top edge of the device. Hold the card flat against the top of the phone, not the middle.
  • Android — usually the centre of the back, near the camera.

Hold the card still for a second rather than waving it past.

Check the phone supports NFC

Most phones made after 2018 (iPhone XS/XR and newer, most modern Androids) have NFC. On Android, also check that NFC is toggled on in settings — it sometimes ships disabled.

Remove thick or metal cases

Thick cases, and especially metal ones, block the NFC signal. Try tapping directly against the phone without the case.

Keep metal away

Don't hold the card pressed against keys, coins, or other cards while tapping — nearby metal interferes with the signal.

Still not working?

Test the card against a different phone. If it fails on several phones, the tag itself may be damaged — get in touch through the contact form on our homepage and we'll sort out a replacement.
